What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) and how do you plan for it?

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) is the lowest order quantity that can be produced for one model. What sets this number is not the manufacturer's whim but how preparation costs are spread across the quantity.

What determines the MOQ?

  • Fabric: the minimum yardage required by weaving or knitting mills
  • Dye: the minimum batch size per colour
  • Preparation: pattern, grading, cutting plan and machine setup
  • Print and labels: production quantities for screens, blocks and labels

Tips for small brands

Reducing the number of colours is the most effective way to lower the MOQ. Using the same fabric across several models also eases the fabric minimum. Plan the size split in advance; piling up in a single size raises stock risk.

Planning

Design the first order as a market test, not for profit margin. Scaling up the best-selling model in the second order is safer than placing a high quantity on the whole collection from the start.
